The European Natural Beauty Awards (ENBA) express their deep concern following the recent confirmation by Maciej Berestecki, spokesperson for the European Commission, of the likely withdrawal of the EU Green Claims Directive.
Presented in March 2023 as part of the Green Deal, this directive aimed to establish a harmonized framework requiring companies to scientifically substantiate their environmental claims and have them verified by independent bodies.
“In a sector where terms like ‘natural’ or ‘sustainable’ are too often used without real foundation, this withdrawal sends a dangerous signal. It undermines genuinely committed brands and deprives consumers of their right to reliable and verified information,” says Macha Chibani, COO of ENBA.
As an independent organization, the ENBA places transparency and rigor at the heart of its process:
- Each selected product must be formulated with 99% natural-origin ingredients.
- The remaining 1% of synthetic-origin ingredients must strictly comply with the highest standards of European natural cosmetics certifications: BioVidaSana, Cosmos, or Natrue.
The European Natural Beauty Awards (ENBA) will continue to uphold high standards to support committed brands, empower consumers, and combat all forms of greenwashing. This regulatory retreat only reinforces the need for independent initiatives capable of filling the void left by the absence of a strong legal European framework.
